Prerequisites to Making the Transfer
Before you jump into transferring the data, there are three things that you should always check beforehand. Failing to do any one of these can cause complications, make the process take longer, or even make it fail altogether.
Here’s what you should always do before transferring data:
- Make sure your Wi-Fi connection is stable – for optimal transfers, you are going to need a strong Wi-Fi connection that you trust. We’re going to be doing everything wirelessly, so a connection that dips isn’t going to work well.
- Make sure you have at least 75% charge – it’s better to have more charge, especially if you have a lot of data to transfer over. Your phone is going to warm up, and your battery will drain surprisingly fast, so be prepared for this.
- Check how much data you’re moving – you need to make sure that the iPhone that you’re transferring your data to actually has enough space on it to receive everything! Double-check everything and delete or move any files from the Android that you can do without if you’re coming close to using up all your space. This might take some time, so be prepared to have a bit of patience.
How to Transfer Data From Android to iPhone
Knowing how to transfer data from Android to iPhone is crucial if you are planning on making the switch. While it might sound daunting, the process is a lot easier than you might think, and it doesn’t take too long, depending on how much data you have to transfer.
Below, we will go through two great methods that you can use to safely and securely get your data from point A to point B.
Option 1 – Use Your Google Account to Transfer Data
If you can’t use Move to iOS for any reason, or you only want to move over a handful of files from one device to another, using your Google Account is a great way to do it. We will go through the steps you need to follow below.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Go to your “Settings” on your Android device and find the Google tab. Select “Backup”, then toggle on all the categories you would like to be synced across devices. For more information on what is being copied, you can select “Google Account Data” in the “Backup Details” list.
- Once the sync is done, you can now go to your iPhone and go to: Settings → Mail → Accounts → Add Account → put in your Gmail information to log in. Once logged in, the data will automatically sync and get imported to your iPhone.
Alternatively, you can simply upload the files you want to transfer to a Google Drive Folder, then download it onto your iPhone. This usually works, but bear in mind that you get 15GB of free storage with a standard Google account. If you need more storage, you will need to pay for it.
Option 2 – Use Move to iOS
This is the go-to option that Apple uses, and your Apple device will already have it downloaded onto it when you get it. You will need to download the app to your Android from the Google Play Store.
Once the app is downloaded, you can get your iPhone onto the iOS Setup Assistant page (where it says “Hello” in a variety of languages). If you have gone past this and can already access the home screen, you are going to need to factory reset the device, as Move to iOS won’t work.
Here are the steps you need to follow:
- Once you are on iOS Setup Assistant, work your way through the initial setup slides (establish a passcode, Wi-Fi connection, and accept all the terms and conditions), and go to the Apps & Data screen.
- Select “Move Data from Android” and tap “continue”.
- Now, open up the Move to iOS app on your Android device and agree to the privacy policies, then grant access to your location and files. Tap “continue” once you get to the “Find Your Code” screen.
- An OTC (one-time code) will show up on your iPhone now. Enter this code onto your Android, and the pairing process will begin.
- Once the two devices are paired, select which files you want to transfer to your iPhone. This will include things like user settings, videos and photos, calendar information, Google accounts, contacts, and messages.
- With all the files selected, you now just need to leave your devices alone so that the transfer can proceed without issues. If you have a lot of data to transfer, you can expect this to take a minimum of 30 minutes, but it can easily take longer.
You Can’t Use Move to iOS if You Have Already Set Up Your iPhone
It isn’t possible to use Move to iOS if you have already set up your iPhone and gone past the Setup Assistant, unfortunately. If you have done this, or you found an Android with data that you want to transfer to your iPhone, the best thing to do would be to backup your iPhone, then reset it to factory settings.
As you are setting the device up again, follow the above instructions for how to transfer the data from Android to iPhone using Move to iOS. Again, make sure you have sufficient storage, and that the other requirements we mentioned at the beginning of the article have been met before you start.
