For now, let’s focus on what you should do if your iPhone is not syncing with iCloud.

Simple Solutions for Getting Your iPhone to Sync With iCloud

Before you start jumping to the worst-case scenarios, how about you try a few of these simple solutions to get your iPhone and iCloud syncing again? Chances are, it’s something simple that’s preventing them from working as they should be.

Double-Check That iCloud Works

It’s wise to check that iCloud is working before doing anything else. To do this, you can check the System Status Page. If it isn’t working, then you might need to simply wait it out. If it is working, you can continue and find the solution to your problem.

Log Out and Log In

Before you log out and log back in, we recommend backing up your iCloud data just to be safe. Once this has been done, log out of iCloud on all the relevant devices, then log back in.

Make sure you’re using all the right logins and passwords. Write them down somewhere secret if you need to!

Follow these simple steps to log out: iCloud Settings → System Preferences → Sign Out

Make Sure You’re Logged in Properly

In order for syncing to happen, you need to be logged into iCloud with the save Apple ID on all your devices. Go and double-check this, and if there are different Apple IDs in use, log out and log back in using the correct information.

You can check which devices need to be changed by going to icloud.com and logging on → iCloud Settings → My Devices (check that all the devices you want to sync are listed).

While you’re in iCloud settings, you can also double-check that the dates and times are correct: Settings → Apple ID → iCloud –? iCloud Drive → Toggle On

Ensure That iCloud is Enabled for the Right Apps

In your settings, you can check to see which apps are using iCloud. Make sure that iCloud access is on, too. You can toggle it off, then on to reboot the system and hopefully get it working.

Is Cell Access Enabled?

If you noticed that everything is syncing properly when you’re on Wi-Fi, but it stops when you use data or your cellular network, you should check your settings to see if you have enabled syncing to happen while off Wi-Fi.

If none of the above worked, you can move onto these options to see if you can get your iPhone syncing with iCloud again. If none of these do the trick, we will need to recommend you go to a trusted repair shop (like us) so that your device can be checked and repaired if necessary.

Make Sure Your Device is Up-to-Date

Usually an iPhone will update without any issues, but sometimes things just don’t do right. If you are struggling to update your iPhone, you can update your iOS in Recovery Mode. To do this, you will need the latest version of iTunes on a Windows or Mac laptop/PC.

Follow these steps:

  1. Connect your Windows/Mac device to the phone
  2. Do a force restart (steps outlined in an above section) to get your phone in Recovery Mode
  3. Don’t let go of the buttons until the phone screen has the Recovery mode screen (a charging cable with an arrow pointed at a laptop)
  4. Select ‘update’ when the option to restore or update on your computer shows up
  5. Confirm, then follow the instructions given to you (it can take up to 15 minutes, so have some patience)
  6. Your phone will restart on its own once you’re done

If this doesn’t work, you can try updating your iOS in DFU Mode. This mode is more complex than Recovery Mode, and varies depending on the device model you have, follow these steps to effectively go through the process.

Just be aware that DFU will restore iOS to a clean slate while bypassing iBoot, which Recovery Mode uses. As such, make sure you back up all your important data before proceeding.

If this doesn’t work, you will need to get in touch with a professional like us, or Apple.

Restart Your Device

Sometimes a simple restart is all that’s needed to jumpstart the correct processes in your iPhone. Depending on the iPhone model you have, you will need to take different steps to force restart your device.

For iPhones that Support iOS 16 or Later

  1. Quickly press the volume up button and release
  2. Quickly press the volume down button and release
  3. Hold down the side button
  4. Release the side button when the Apple logo shows

For iPhones that Don’t Support iOS 16 (iPhones 6, 7, 8 and SE (1st Gen)

  • iPhone 6 models and iPhone SE (1st Gen) – Hold down the home and sleep/wake button at the same time, then release the buttons when you see the Apple logo
  • iPhone 7 – Hold down the sleep/wake button and volume down button at the same time, then release the buttons when you see the Apple logo
  • iPhone 8 and iPhone SE (2nd Gen) – Quickly press the volume up button and release, then do the same with the volume down button. Hold down the side button, and release it when you see the Apple logo

Reset Your iPhone

If nothing else is working, you might need to erase your iPhone to its default state. This will get rid of everything on the device, so make sure you back up all your important data before proceeding if you want to keep it.

To reset your iPhone, follow these steps: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings → Erase iPhone.
